What does 'Organic Practices' mean on DoLeaf?
Plants listed in "Organic Practices" are grown without the use of non-organic pesticides, insecticides or herbicides. Growers rely on naturally made fertilizers and chemical-free pest control. While plants in "Organic Practices" adhere to fundamental standards of organic farming, growers may or may not have completed the accredidation process for organic certification. If you’re interested in knowing more about a particular grower's organic practices, please review their plant descriptions and About Our Garden page, or contact them through their DoLeaf store.
What does 'heirloom' mean?
"Heirloom" refers to heirloom varieties of plants that were commonly grown in previous decades or centuries but are not generally grown in large-scale agriculture today. Many heirloom plants precede agricultural industrialization and can help to diversify our gardens and our diets. Although some growers consider heirloom varieties to date back over 100 years, DoLeaf defines cultivars as "heirloom" if they originated before 1950. Many heirloom plants on DoLeaf could have been found in homesteaders’ vegetable and flower gardens or in the Victory Gardens planted during World War Two.
Where are tubers, corms, and rhizomes on DoLeaf?
To keep shipping forms simple, we use the blanket term "bulb" to refer to all geophytes: tubers, corms, rhizomes and bulbs. However, sellers may explain in their plant descriptions that the item actually ships as a corm, rhizome, or tuber. In some cases, sellers will use the term "fan," particularly when describing irises and daylilies. A "fan" consists of a root with foliage cut back to roughly four to six inches above the bulb.
Who are you people?
We're a small team of web-savvy gardeners spread across the U.S. who want to share our love of gardening with other backyard growers and green thumbs. We established DoLeaf to provide a resource for novice, casual, and master gardeners as they plan and grow their gardens. We also set up DoLeaf to help small nurseries and independent garden centers that are more interested in horticulture than agribusiness to find and grow their businesses.
Buyer FAQ
Can plants really be shipped?
YES! Plants can be shipped domestically in the United States. In fact, many online and print catalogs exclusively ship plants as their entire business. DoLeaf sellers ship plants via UPS, FedEx and the U.S. Postal Service to get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as possible. Our experienced sellers are pros at packing and shipping plants so they arrive healthy and ready to grow.
Do I need an Amazon account?
Yes, DoLeaf processes all transactions through Amazon Payments. We are looking at adding new payment methods in the near future.
What are the icons at the bottom of each photo?
Those icons represent the optimal growing conditions of the plant pictured, much like the tags that you'll find on plants bought from a store. To get more information, click on the plant and view the key below the plant’s picture.
Help! I've received the plant, but what do I do to make it thrive?
DoLeaf sellers are experts who love to help people with plants, so they can help you find the right spot, fertilizer, soil conditions, and everything else. Just go to the seller’s DoLeaf store and click the “Contact Us” to send your questions to the plant’s seller.

How are shipping costs calculated?
The buyer is charged the maximum base cost for one item (quantity 1 of a single item) and then the ships with other item cost for all other plants. This is best explained with an example:
Example 1: Standard Shipping
- 3 bulbs ($6 base, $0.25 ships with other item)
- 10 seed packets ($4 base, $0.10 ships with other item)
Shipping Total: $7.50 ($6 + 2x$0.25 + 10x$0.10)
Example 2: Fixed cost shipping
For some items, like trees, it may be necessary to ship them completely separately, so there’s no shipping discount for buying multiple. To reflect this, set the base cost and ships with other item cost to the same amount.
- 3 trees ($10 base, $10 ships with other item)
Shipping Total: $30 (3x$10)
How can I get the most from my DoLeaf store?
You can sell on DoLeaf with just one plant for sale, but to get the most out of your store, here are some tips for optimizing your store and increasing your sales.
- Add a variety of plants - Buyers love to get multiple plants at the same time, and the bigger your selection, the better. Plus, if you offer a variety of prices, you'll be offering them plenty of options to fit their budget.
- Provide scientific names - Make sure to mention the plant's scientific name in the description. Many of our buyers find us through Google when they search for a plant by its scientific name. Wouldn't it be great if they found your plants in their search?
- Use high quality images - Upload up to 3 high quality images for each plant. Buyers love to see big, beautiful images of the adult plants they're buying.
- Give a good description - A thorough description tells buyers what is unique and special about each plant. This can help them make the decision to purchase.
