POMEGRANATE 'WONDERFUL'
Punica granatum 'Wonderful'

This truly beautiful small tree or shrub has been in cultivation since ancient times. It has been a symbol of love, fertility, abundance in many ancient and contemporary cultures. The showy orange flowers attract hummingbirds

We are now re-discovering the wonderful properties of the fruit of the Pomegranate.

The Pomegranate juice has more than twice the amount of antioxidants found in grape juice, green tea or red wine. It reduces the hardening the arteries. It fights cancer and believed to be especially beneficial in preventing and curing prostate cancer.
It supports the health of the heart, lowers cholesterol, and is a powerful weapon against skin, prostate, lung and breast cancer.
More info here: http://www.naturalnews.com/023145.html

Pomegranates need hot summers for good fruit development and mild winters (to about 15 Fahrenheit) for survival. The regular deep watering helps fruit development and reduces the number of thorns. The tree is self-fertile. The flowers are born on the tip of new growth. Flowering and fruit is expected in 2 years.
Hardiness Zone - 8-10. In zone 7b the plant needs the protection of the wall of the house and has to be planted to the southern or wester side. If the temperature goes below 15 Fahrenheit, give the plant extra protection with mulching and frost blanket.
Bloom – Showy orange flowers followed by burnished red fruits. The fruits ripen in the fall.
Winter – In cooler climates the leaves turn bright yellow before they drop in the late autumn.
Mature Height - This plant will can to 15-20' and can be kept pruned to around 10' tall and wide
Sun – Full sun. This fruit tree can tolerate heat.
Water – Low water requirements, but the plant prefers regular deep summer watering.
Fertilizer – Use balanced fertilizer in March and in November.
Soil - This plant prefers deep soil but it is adaptable to different soils types.
Container - This will do best when planted out in the garden. It can be kept in container while small.
